An Ordinance Establishing the Cambridge Community Connect Program
Social isolation affects nearly one in three older adults, increasing all-cause mortality risks by 22%. Over 25% of Cambridge seniors live in isolation; although senior centers offer extensive resources, many vulnerable residents do not access them due to social anxiety, lack of internet literacy, or mobility constraints.
This municipal program matches public high school students in pairs with isolated elderly residents for bimonthly home visits. Under Council on Aging oversight, student volunteers act as "warm connectors" by assisting seniors with basic technology (smartphones, email), serving tea, and helping them transition into senior center activities. Students are compensated with credits, awards, or stipends.
